Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS)

In order to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the people of China and of every country in the world, as well as developing China and the world’s cooperation and exchange in the realms of politics, economics, culture, education and trade, the Chinese government established a scholarship. This scholarship aids outstanding students, educators, and learners from all over the world in coming to China’s universities for study or research. The Chinese Educational Ministry entrusts the National Study Abroad Fund Management Committee (hereafter abbreviated as “NSAFC”) responsible for managing Chinese Government Scholarship recipients’ recruitment and enrollment, as well managing their affairs while in China. Tianjin Foreign Studies University is one of the participating institutions for this scholarship.

The Chinese Government Scholarship is awarded through the following programs:

1. Chinese University Program

The Chinese Education Ministry distributes the scholarship through counties, autonomous regions, as well as local educational ministries and universities. Universities directly select outstanding students for enrollment in a graduate degree program in China. TFSU only admits graduate students for this scholarship. Applicants should follow the application process provided by Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

2. Bilateral Program

This includes full or partial scholarships in accordance with the educational exchange agreements or consensus between the Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities or international organizations. It supports undergraduate students, graduate students, general scholars and senior scholars.

Applicants shall apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of their home countries.

3. EU Program

This is a full scholarship to encourage students from EU member countries to study and research in China in order to promote mutual understanding between China and EU members. It supports undergraduate students, graduate students, general scholars and senior scholars. Applicants shall apply to the Office for Education and Culture, Mission of the P. R. China to the European Union.

4. AUN Program

This is a full scholarship for the ASEAN University Network (AUN) to sponsor students, teachers and scholars from ASEAN member nations to study in China and to enhance the academic exchange and mutual understanding between China and ASEAN members. It only supports graduates. Applicants shall apply to AUN Secretariat.

5. Great Wall Program

This is a full scholarship for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to sponsor students and scholars in developing countries to study and research in China. It only supports general scholars and senior scholars. Applicants shall apply to the National Commissions for UNESCO in their home countries.

6. PIF Program

This is a full scholarship to sponsor students from Pacific island countries to study in China. It supports undergraduates, graduates, general scholars and senior scholars.

Language Requirement

Applicants who don’t meet the requirements of Chinese language proficiency of our faculties will be required to take preparatory Chinese language courses at our university or other institutions as listed by the CSC according to the date indicated on admission notification before pursuing degree studies.

Applicants of English taught programs do not need to attend preparatory Chinese language courses.

Related administration rules and regulations

1. Scholarship registration

At the beginning of each academic year, Chinese Government Scholarship holders should register and sign the on the CGS holder’s list at the International Students’ Office. Those who do not appear to register or sign the list will not be granted the extension of their scholarships. To get the monthly living allowance, CGS recipients should confirm attendance every month.

2. Annual Review of CGS status

According to the CGS management regulations, the CSC will evaluate the performance of the scholarship students annually. Only those students whose performance meets the requirements are eligible to continue to receive the scholarship for the following year. The annual review of the CGS status usually begins in April. It is based on the students’ academic report (grades), study attitude, class attendance, behavior, rewards and punishments. The scholarship of those who do not pass the evaluation will be suspended for one year or be terminated completely.
